Winter has arrived, but not everyone’s car is ready for snow and ice. Following some auto service & repair essentials will go a long way in improving your car’s performance and keeping you safe when dealing with freezing temperatures and snowy weather. It’s never too late to take the necessary steps to ensure your vehicle is ready for blustery conditions.

How to Get Your Car Ready for Winter

1. Schedule an Oil Change

An oil change is always a good idea when the seasons change, especially when the harsh weather of winter sets in. An oil change is relatively inexpensive and usually includes a vehicle inspection to make sure your car is prepared for winter.  That inspection alone might save you a towing bill or, worse yet, being stranded!

2. Check Your Tires

Icy and snowy roadways make it challenging for your vehicle to stop or maintain traction—particularly if the tires are worn. Cold temperatures reduce tire pressure, which increases wear and reduces tire performance, so the pressure should be checked regularly. You can also check the tread wear to determine if your tires need replacement. An easy way to do this is to use the penny test by placing a penny into the treads with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, you need new tires. Most repair shops will provide a more thorough tire inspection at no cost to you. Drivers that encounter extended freezing temperatures and snowy conditions may even switch to “WINTER TIRES”. These winter tires are designed to grip the road better at lower temperatures and get you through snow, ice and slush.

3. Prep an Emergency Kit

Even if your vehicle is in good shape, it’s best to be prepared for a potential emergency that could leave you stranded. Besides standard emergency essentials like tire changing equipment and jumper cables, you can pack a blanket, extra coats, boots, and gloves so you can stay warm until help arrives. Tools like an ice scraper, a small snow shovel, and kitty litter or sand could help you get moving again if you get stuck in the snow.
