A chainsaw is a versatile tool that's useful for everything from cutting firewood to pruning trees. However, like any lawn equipment or power tool, it can be dangerous if misused. Here are a few guidelines to follow when using this machine for the first time.
Do:
Inspect it before use.
Inspect the machinery before starting it to ensure its safety features are operational and the chain has proper tension on the guide bar. Tighten the chain and sharpen it (or bring it by our power shop) if necessary.
If you need to refuel the device, place it on a flat surface away from open flames. The owners manual should have detailed instructions regarding your specific model, so read it thoroughly before use.
Wear protective gear.
Always wear long, fitted clothing, as loose articles can get caught in the saw’s teeth. Also, invest in protective equipment, such as a helmet with a face guard, gloves, chaps, hearing protection, and steel-toed or logging boots. These items will not only protect you from the chainsaw; they'll also keep you safe from flying debris and falling tree trunks caused by the machine.
Don’t:
Climb with a chainsaw.
Ascending trees and ladders with the device can be incredibly dangerous and requires special equipment and expertise to accomplish safely. If you must cut limbs higher than your shoulders, consider a different tool, like a pole saw or a manual rope saw.
Also, never stand on a log or board and saw between your feet. Instead, stand with both feet flat on the ground and the chainsaw to the side of your legs. If working on an incline, don’t stand below the tree, either. Always stand uphill from it instead.
Saw alone.
Even experienced chainsaw users should never do a job alone. Always have someone nearby but not too close. Also, bring a first-aid kit complete with one or more blood-clotting bandages. If you’re out in the woods, place a traffic safety flag by your vehicle as well.
