Many hunters grow their own food plots to attract deer to their properties. Even someone with little farming experience can grow a plot that delivers results. Here are some important factors to consider as you prepare for this process.
How to Attract Deer With a Food Plot
1. Choose a Location
The location of your food plot requires careful consideration. The best food plots have adjacent cover that deer will perceive as shelter, like a thicket or a tall screening crop like corn. Deer perceive narrow, skinny areas as more secure, and L-shape plots allow for maximum growth.
When possible, use pre-existing openings rather than trying to clear a new space for the plot. Don’t settle on an area that’s visible to roads or neighbors, and prepare multiple entry trails.
2. Eliminate Weeds
Before planting any crops, you’ll need to eliminate the vegetation already growing in the area. Weed control sprays containing glyphosate will thoroughly eliminate weeds and grasses.
After this step is complete, collect a soil sample that can be sent in for a lab test. The Baxter County extension office provides soil tests at no charge and are pretty quick with your results. The results will tell you which fertilizers or other amendments are needed to optimize the soil for plant growth. We have several staff members that can help you interpret the lab analysis if you bring it by the store.
3. Plant & Maintain
Gregg Farm Services stock a wide variety of seed that can be used for a food plot, including clover, oats, wheat, and brassica. Plant the seeds during fall or spring in accordance with their recommended growing seasons.
Farm supplies such as drag instruments and tillers should be used to prepare the soil for the crops. You can also maintain healthy growth with periodic mowing and herbicide sprays.
