Whether you have the vocal capabilities to rival a superstar or simply enjoy belting out your favorite songs with your friends, karaoke offers a fun way to enjoy music at your favorite bar or lounge. As much fun as karaoke can be, there is an etiquette you should follow to make sure it's as enjoyable as it can be. Keep these guidelines in mind the next time you head to the bar for a sing-off.

Do:

Respect the person singing.

If you don't like the performer's song choice or their singing voice, especially if they're off-key, keep in mind that it takes a substantial amount of courage for some people to pick up the microphone in a crowded room. Give them the courtesy of listening and applause. If you can tell they're nervous, it's OK to sing along to encourage them.

Sing with enthusiasm.

When it's your turn to sing, have fun. It's OK to sing off-key deliberately, and if you've had one too many drinks, don't worry about it. Karaoke is meant to bring out your inhibitions.
If you need a boost of confidence, partner up with a friend and choose a song you love and know the words to. Once you're singing, you'll realize you had nothing to worry about.

Don't:

Hog the microphone.

When you're having fun, it's easy to get carried away and keep singing, but please remember others might be awaiting their turn. Sing one song and then offer the microphone to someone else. If no one else is waiting, it's OK to sing one more, but always check before performing another song.

Force someone to sing who doesn't want to.

If you're enjoying a night out with friends, remember that not everyone is comfortable being in front of crowds, let alone performing. If a friend or acquaintance doesn't want to participate, be kind. Gently encourage them to join in by telling them how much fun it is, but be aware that forcing them to do so can make them feel self-conscious and discourage them from attending another karaoke night with you and your friends.
