The game of darts requires practice and skill to master. One important foundational element of having precise aim is getting into the right position. Whether you’re a beginner or you’re simply looking for a refresher on the basics, here’s what you can do to enhance your throwing stance.
How Can You Improve Your Dart-Throwing Stance?
1. Stand Parallel to the Board’s Center
Start by putting yourself in the right position relative to the board. Ideally, your body should be in line with the center of the board. Keep in mind that the toe line, also known as the oche, isn’t always placed correctly, so you should use the board as your guide instead.
2. Point Your Throwing Side Forward
If you’re right-handed, stand so that the right side of your body faces the board. Lead with your left side if you’re left-handed. This positioning will keep the upper part of your body aligned as you throw the darts, minimizing any arm swinging or other movements that could affect your aim.
3. Find the Right Angle
Some experienced players like to stand facing completely forward, while others like to be perpendicular. Most beginners find that accuracy is best achieved at an angle somewhere in between. Until you’ve found the spot you like best, experiment with angles so that your body is turned between 45 and 90 degrees.
4. Distribute Your Weight
Your front foot acts as the base that anchors you as you throw, so it should hold the majority of your weight. Aim to keep roughly 80% of your weight on this foot and about 20% in the foot at the back, which should just help you keep your balance.
5. Remain Still
While you’ll need to move your arm to throw, try to stay calm and still to the greatest degree possible. Leaning too far forward will throw off your balance, as will too much momentum. For the most control, only throw by moving your forearm, wrist, and fingers to release the dart.
