Modern tires are more long-lasting, reliable, and safer than ever. However, even the most advanced tires can go flat, which can be dangerous, especially if it happens while driving. Recognizing the signs of a flat tire and knowing what to do if it happens while driving can keep you and your family safe on the road.

Signs of an Impending Flat

Noticing wear and tear on your tires can help avoid a flat while on the road. The first sign is uneven tread, which could be caused by a misalignment that can shorten the lifespan of your tires. If the tread is less than 3/16 of an inch deep, about the space between the edge of a penny and the top of Lincoln's head, you should replace the tire.

Next, if you notice bulges, bubbles, or blisters, do not drive on the tire. These signs indicate severe damage, possibly from impacting a pothole or hitting a curb. The bulge means the fabric inside the tire can no longer hold the pressure, creating the potential for a blowout while driving.

What to Do if You Have a Flat While Driving

When your tire blows out, it's important to know that breaking too quickly can cause you to lose control. Instead, gently apply your breaks. If possible, pull into a parking lot or onto a side street, out of the way of traffic. If these options are not available, pull as far onto the right shoulder as safely possible. Turn your hazard lights on to make sure other drivers see you.

Once you are safely off the road, you can install your spare tire if you know how and have the necessary tools. If you do not have a spare or are unsure of how to install it safely, contact a mechanic.

How to Avoid Flat Tires

There are some preventative measures to take to ensure your tires stay properly inflated. First, check the pressure once a month. You can find the recommended pressure in your owner's manual or printed on the side of the tire.

Additionally, avoid puncture hazards by finding alternative routes around construction zones or poorly maintained roads. You can also rotate your tires every 5,000 to 10,000 miles to avoid uneven wear and prolong their lives. Monitor the tread depth and replace tires with treads shallower than 3/16 of an inch.
