3 Signs Your Car's Tire Tread Has Gone Bad
When it comes to auto maintenance, your tires should always be a priority. While the engine is what makes your car run, the tires are what keep it on the road. Like many auto parts, they'll eventually need to be replaced due to daily wear and tear. The tread is generally the first thing to go; these are the raised grooves on the surface. To determine whether it's time to have them replaced, here's what you need to know.
How to Tell Tire Tread is Too Worn Down
1. Shallow Tread Depth
If you've ever looked at a brand new tire, you'll notice that the depth of the tread is quite deep. The deeper and more complex it is, the more the rubber can hug the road. However, due to the friction and heat, it eventually gets filed down and becomes more shallow.
Once it becomes thinner than one-sixteenth of an inch, replace it. While there are measurement tools specifically designed for this, the easiest thing you can do is to use a penny. Hold it upside down, facing you; if you can see President Lincoln's forehead, it's too thin.
2. Poor Handling
When the tread is too smooth and shallow, you may notice that your driving isn't as accurate. On a dry day, you may have trouble making turns, especially at sharper corners. If it's raining, your car is at a higher risk of hydroplaning, which essentially means it will slide across the surface. This is incredibly dangerous and can lead to automotive accidents.
3. Wobbling
Finally, in addition to poor handling, you may notice that your ride is bumpier and more wobbly. This is more evident at lower speeds; the slower rotation makes the unevenness of the tires undeniable. It may also feel like your car is bouncing. Either way, it's time for new tires.
