There are several mouth-related conditions that can be present at birth, including ankyloglossia, which is more commonly known as tongue-tie. This condition affects the lingual frenulum, which is the band of tissue connecting the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Here's a closer look at how to identify it and what a dentist can do to help.

What Are the Symptoms of Tongue-Tie?

If a child is born with tongue-tie, their lingual frenulum is too short or thick. This occurs because of a gene mutation, and it impacts tongue movement. Typical symptoms include the inability to lift or stick the tongue out. Should the baby or young child be able to stick their tongue out past their teeth, it might appear heart-shaped or notched.

Other symptoms include breastfeeding challenges, such as difficulty staying attached, clicking sounds when attempting to nurse, and nipple discomfort like bruising, cracking, and scabbing. Children with tongue-tie can also experience issues with speaking, eating, and swallowing, which result in problems gaining weight. Dental issues, such as tooth decay, can also occur because the tongue is unable to remove food particles from the teeth and gums.

How Is It Treated?

The lingual frenulum can eventually loosen, allowing the tongue to function normally. If this does not occur on its own, there are two main treatments for the oral health issue. One of the most popular is a frenotomy, in which the affected tissue is cut or lasered off to “release” the tongue. Frenotomy procedures take a few minutes and rarely cause bleeding or infections.

If the lingual frenulum is so thick that a frenotomy is not possible, the dentist will recommend a frenuloplasty. This general anesthesia procedure releases the tongue using surgical tools and requires stitches. As the tissue heals, the stitches absorb safely into the body and allow for optimal tongue movement.
