Summertime means warmer weather and more time spent outdoors. While it's important to protect your skin year-round, small tweaks should be made to your skin care routine in the summer to protect your skin from the heat and sun, especially if you deal with acne. Here's what you should know when heading outdoors during the hot and humid months.

How to Care for Your Skin During the Summer

1. Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the most important component of skin care. Not only does it protect your skin from dark spots and wrinkles, but it also helps prevent skin cancer by diminishing the effects of UV rays.

Make sure to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin every day. For facial sunscreen, be sure that it's at least SPF 30 to ensure adequate protection. Due to extra perspiration and more frequent trips to the swimming pool during the summer, look for waterproof products when you plan on being active.

2. Avoid Heavy Skin Care and Makeup Products

The summer heat causes people to sweat more, opening up their pores to cool them down. If your skin care and makeup are too heavy, they can clog your pores and lead to acne.

When it comes to skin care, try using moisturizers like gel or serums that are thinner but just as hydrating as thicker products. Choose non-comedogenic makeup that won't clog your pores, or opt for a BB or CC cream instead of foundation, which is more lightweight while still evening out skin tone.

3. Minimize Sun Exposure

Though most people like to spend time by the pool or at the beach during the summer, it's important to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Too much sun exposure not only results in sunburn but can also lead to serious skin cancers like melanoma.

Even if you're smart with sunscreen, it's important to be careful when it comes to how much time you spend outdoors. Take frequent breaks in the shade and wear sun-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses when you plan on being in direct sunlight to further protect your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays.

4. Stay Hydrated

Drinking lots of water is important year-round but more so during the summer when the steady heat causes your body to lose moisture more quickly. Regular hydration helps keep your skin firm and can even minimize the appearance and formation of acne.
