Locks are essential to the security of your home or office. They require a matching key or code and may require an experienced locksmith to install. Different styles are available and each provides a specific level of safety. Knowing how they work could determine the best option for the property, so take a closer look at the following to become familiar with the basics.

How Do Locks Work?

Traditional locks feature three main components – the cylinder, the bold, and the strike plate. The cylinder contains a metal mechanism that moves the bolt in and out of the strike plate, which mounts on the inside of the door frame. A series of pins are set up in a unique formation inside the cylinder to ensure that the bolt remains in place.

It’s the ridges on the key that allow it to open the lock. They match the pattern of the pins, gently pushing them to the side so that you can turn the cylinder and release the bolt. If the door is unlocked, you can use the same motion to engage the pins and set the bolt back in place.

What Are the Different Types?

Ward locks are the simplest form in that they feature curved pieces of metal on the inside of the cylinder. The holes of the key must line up exactly in order to turn the lock. You can insert other keys, but the metal pieces will prevent any movement.

Tumbler locks are the most common, with the moving pins inside the cylinder that operate the bolt. The precision of these devices prevents keys that don’t match the pattern from getting much further than the opening. Electronic locks that feature a keypad or a card reader operate in about the same way. The only difference is that they require a specific set of numbers to trigger the pins instead of requiring a key. If the code passes inspection, then the system will activate and release the bolt.
