The average sewer line holds a lot of water, which can make it appealing to tree roots seeking hydration and nutrients. Roots will often make their way through tiny cracks in sewer pipes so they can take advantage of the steady water supply. This can cause a number of potentially serious issues, including plumbing backups, sinkholes, and sewer line and septic tank damage. Here are three ways to get rid of tree roots and avoid problems.

What to Do if You Have Tree Roots in Your Sewer Line

1. Use Rock Salt

Pouring rock salt into a sewer line will pull moisture from the tree roots and eventually kill them. This is because salt naturally absorbs water and humidity from its surroundings. The easiest way to get it into the line is to purchase approximately two pounds of rock salt and pour it, a half-pound at a time, into the toilet, flushing until it's gone each time. Then, don't use the toilet for about 12 hours. In that time, it will have ample opportunity to draw moisture from any roots and kill them.

2. Apply a Foaming Root Killer

Foaming root-killing products contain an herbicidal powder that lathers and froths when it comes into contact with water. If using one of these products, follow the label directions. Most require you to pour the powder into the toilet bowl and thoroughly flush it down, but be sure to wear goggles and gloves as you do, as the herbicide is a toxic chemical. The product may take anywhere from two days to a week before you see results, but foaming root killers can be effective at getting rid of roots and preventing new ones from growing.

3. Call a Professional

By far the most effective way to eliminate tree roots from a sewer line is to hire a plumbing professional. They will inspect the line, locate the exact location of the roots, and use specialized equipment, like a mechanical auger, to cut up and disperse them. This method provides the fastest results and keeps your plumbing safe in the process.
