If your child is hesitant about the performance aspect of performing arts, you’re not alone. Many little ones thrive in the dance studio but express hesitation when it comes to getting on stage. Helping them break past stage fright can set them up for success in overcoming their fears well into the future. Here are some ways to guide and support them through the phase.

5 Strategies for Helping Children Get Past Stage Fright

1. Listen to Their Concerns

If your child has expressed nervousness about an upcoming performance, give them space to share their concerns. Listen actively; there may be a specific fear that’s nagging at them. For example, if they’re worried about forgetting part of their routine, offer a solution, such as following their fellow dancers.

2. Teach Grounding Exercises

Adults often use grounding exercises to ease anxiety. Children can adopt the same habits. Encourage them to try deep breathing, focus on their five senses, or visualize a successful performance. Walk your little one through the exercises before the big day, so they know how to use them ahead of time.

3. Channel Positivity

Nervousness is a negative emotion, so try spinning anxious energy into something positive. You could discuss all the exciting aspects of their upcoming performance on the way to the dance studio for regular classes. For example, talk about their outfit and how their friends will be joining them on stage.

4. Direct Their Gaze

Seeing an auditorium full of people can be overwhelming for a child. Instead of looking at a sea of faces, have them stare at the back of the room. Not only will this prevent them from focusing on the number of attendees, but it can also help them maintain proper posture during their routine.

5. Practice at Home

Your child will get plenty of practice at the dance studio, but you can practice with a mock-recital at home, too. Have family members, stuffed animals, and dolls gather as an audience, and recreate the experience as closely as possible. Designate a backstage area, announce them, and play their track for authenticity.
