Custom decks are a wonderful addition to any home. Illuminating your deck will make your outdoor space more usable and enjoyable even at night. Not only does deck lighting add to the ambiance, but it also keeps everyone safe from accidents and mishaps. Here are some ideas.

How to Integrate Lighting Into Your Deck Design

1. Put It Above

Not all custom decks are the same—some have roofs, others do not; either way, you can install lighting overhead. To create a soft glow for uncovered decks, hang string lights across the space or above certain areas. If there’s an overhead structure, mount an outdoor-rated lighting fixture, such as pendant lights or recessed canister lights.

2. Light the Stairs

For custom decks with stairs, consider incorporating lights into the steps. These serve as clear guides for people going up and down your deck at night to avoid tripping or falling in the dark. Rather than individual LED lights, illuminate risers or raised areas by attaching a linear fixture covered with frosted plexiglass.

3. Lay It Low

If your deck has no roof or stairs, in-floor lighting can brighten the space. Another alternative to floor-mounted deck lights is to attach lights to the deck's sides, keeping them at a low height. Doing so illuminates the floor without being too obtrusive.

4. Integrate the Railings

Some lighting setups tend to be overly bright. While they keep you safe, they also stop you from appreciating the view outside. If you want to illuminate your deck without sacrificing the scenery, attach downward-facing lights to the railings and balustrade.

5. Use Lamps

If installing lights is not an option and your deck is covered, consider placing battery-powered lamps in commonly used areas of your deck. One advantage of using floor lamps is that you can easily put them anywhere as needed.
