Whether your car was totaled in an accident or has been collecting rust for years, you may want to hand it off to a junkyard. In this case, it’s important to know how to prepare for this sale. If this is your first time getting rid of a junk car, use these do's and don'ts to make sure you're on the right track.

Do:

Find the title.

Even though you’re not selling your vehicle to another driver, you’ll still need to pass on the deed to the junkyard. Before you hand off your vehicle, locate this document, and make sure that the junkyard you’re going to accepts it. Otherwise, the car will still be yours, which means you will be responsible for any liabilities associated with it.

Cancel the car insurance.

If you’re still paying to insure the car, you don’t have to continue doing so once the title is in someone else’s hands. That’s why it’s important to contact your insurance company once you return home from the junkyard. You can provide them with the date of the sale, and they’ll end your coverage for that vehicle.

Don’t:

Worry about repairs.

While a quick cleaning might do some junk cars good, you shouldn’t waste any money trying to fix up your old vehicle. The junkyard will be happy to accept your car in its current state, even if that means it’s rusted, dented, or just unusable. Best of all, you can still get compensated for the vehicle even though you didn’t lift a finger to restore it.

Forget the license plates.

Before you leave the junk yard, don’t forget to remove the license plates from the front and rear bumpers of your vehicle. You’ll need to take these back to the DMV and alert them of the sale, so they can cancel your car’s registration.
