Of all the car models on the market, the Toyota Prius is one of the most popular, cost-effective, and long-lasting. To make the most of your investment, though, you need to keep up with a maintenance plan and schedule Prius repair services as needed. From routine oil changes to choosing the right type of coolant, the following guide will help ensure your car lasts and works properly for years to come.

3 Tips to Properly Maintain a Prius

1. Oil Changes

Hybrid cars like the Prius have engines that are more complex and intricate than other vehicles. As such, they work best when they have a refined oil in the engine. There are two types of oils available to use: traditional and synthetic. Many people opt for the former because it's cheaper, but for Prius owners, the latter is better. Although synthetic oil costs more, it's more lubricating and does a better job of keeping the engine clean. Opt for this product when you get an oil change, which should be every 10,000 miles or at least once a year.

2. Air Filters

The engine air filter is critical for catching dust, grime, and other particles in the engine compartment. Without it, sensors in the intake system might become clogged. Typically, you should install a new filter every 30,000 to 45,000 miles. That is not to say you should ignore them for that long, though. Pull the pleats apart and clean out any buildup at each oil change to keep the filter in excellent condition.

3. Coolant

Coolant helps prevent the engine from overheating. Because it's a hybrid vehicle, the Prius requires a special type designed by Toyota. This product, which is pink or red, can be purchased either at a dealership or through a verified marketplace from a Toyota-certified seller. Only use this coolant when topping off your engine. Otherwise, you run the risk of serious damage, requiring Prius repairs.
