If you perform DIY projects, such as tile laying or woodworking, a circular saw is likely one of your most-used tools. While many of these come with diamond blades and are, therefore, incredibly durable, they still require maintenance as dirt, dust, tiny bits of debris, pitch, and resin tend to accumulate and hinder their functionality. The following guide offers tips for how to care for your investment.

How to Maintain Saw Blades

1. Wash It Carefully

While you can buy specialized products, a citrus-based kitchen cleaner can also remove debris on saw blades. Another option is standard oven cleaner, but don't use it on Teflon®- or plastic-coated blades to avoid damaging the coating. Spray the surface and wait for a few minutes to loosen any buildup; then, wipe it away while wearing sturdy gloves to protect your hands from cuts. For extra tough grime, use an old toothbrush.

During this process, you should be able to view the diamond-embedded pieces in the blade. If they are worn down, you might need a replacement since dulled diamonds will not cut as effectively and can be a safety risk.

2. Add Lubrication

Some cleaning products will remove the lubrication that blades need to glide effortlessly through materials. After you've wiped off the cleaning agent, rinsed the surface, and dried it well, spray on a light layer of lubricant, like WD-40. Take a paper towel and smooth the grease evenly across the blade to ensure a more uniform coating.

3. Reverse the Blade

Not every saw blade can be used backward, but for those that can, reverse them every few months. This will help distribute wear evenly to prolong the life of the blade and prevent buildup from accumulating in one area in particular.
