Whether you've dealt with a fender bender or a serious collision, filing an auto insurance claim can be stressful. While you certainly don't want to become experienced in this regard, knowing some do's and don'ts can make the process move along smoothly. Use these pointers the next time you're involved in an accident and need help covering the damages.

Do:

Take photos of the scene.

Document the damage before you leave the scene of the crash. Use your smartphone to photograph scratches and dents, as well as any injuries you or your passengers endured. Take note of any tire marks or debris in the road and get documentation of them. Visual evidence can explain how and why the accident transpired and help determine the amount of compensation you're entitled to.

Ask witnesses for contact information.

While at the scene of the incident, consult with any witnesses who may have seen the accident but not been involved in it. Ask them for the names and phone numbers, so your insurance agent can contact them later on.

You could also ask if they would be willing to have you record their take on the event while it's still fresh in their minds. Their testimony could be used to show who was at fault or why the crash occurred.

Don't:

Apologize to anyone.

Many drivers are tempted to say "sorry" when speaking with others involved in an accident, especially if they've been injured. However, avoid using this phrase, even if you're speaking as a courtesy. This could be misconstrued as an admission of fault and used against you down the line.

Negotiate directly with other drivers.

One of the many perks of having an auto insurance policy is relying on an agent to handle your claim. This means you don't need to negotiate with other drivers or their insurance adjusters. If they contact you, redirect them to your agent, who will negotiate on your behalf. They have the skills and experience to ensure you get the compensation you deserve.
