Do:

Take photos of the scene.

Document the damage before you leave the scene of the crash. Use your smartphone to photograph scratches and dents, as well as any injuries you or your passengers endured. Take note of any tire marks or debris in the road and get documentation of them. Ask witnesses for contact information.

While at the scene of the incident, consult with any witnesses who may have seen the accident but not been involved in it. Ask them for the names and phone numbers, so your insurance agent can contact them later on. 

You could also ask if they would be willing to have you record their take on the event while it's still fresh in their minds. Their testimony could be used to show who was at fault or why the crash occurred.

Don't:

Apologize to anyone. 

Many drivers are tempted to say "sorry" when speaking with others involved in an accident, especially if they've been injured. However, avoid using this phrase, even if you're speaking as a courtesy. This could be misconstrued as an admission of fault and used against you down the line.

Negotiate directly with other drivers.
