Warmer weather is just around the corner, which means that it’s time to start preparing your air conditioning unit for the season. While turning it on might seem like the simplest approach, there are several steps that these systems require. Otherwise, hidden issues could develop that disrupt the airflow and cause an unexpected shutdown. If you’re unsure of where to start, take a closer look at the following to determine how to provide the proper level of care.

How to Prep Your Air Conditioning Unit for Summer

1. Swap Out Filters

Cooling systems feature filters that capture any airborne dust and pollen as they pass through the vents. The mesh-like material lowers the risk of accumulation and helps to preserve efficiency. It can only hold a certain amount, which means additional particulates could bypass the screen and collect on various surfaces.

This results in a clog and jeopardizes the comfort of the home. Changing them out at the start of the season is the most effective approach. Make sure to inspect their appearance at least once a month to verify the frequency of replacement.

2. Remove Leaves

Leaves, weeds and other types of greenery might be growing too close to the outdoor condenser unit. If there’s not enough space, then the fan will have difficulty completing the heat transfer and cause the interior temperature to feel warm.

Carefully raking away the loose debris and bagging it up for trash will restore functionality. The unit requires at least three feet of clearance, so make sure to trim back any nearby grasses and shrubs.

3. Check the Drain Pan

Air conditioning systems produce moisture as they move heat from one place to another. This drips down into the bottom of the unit, where there’s a drain pan that directs the excess out of the home and into the yard.

Dust and pollen can collect in this area, mixing with the water and creating a thick sludge. Cleaning it out at the start of the season will ensure a continued flow and avoid an accidental overflow.
