Beautiful hair can do wonders for your confidence and self-esteem. Unfortunately, factors such as the environment, hormones, and styling mishaps can cause hair to become lackluster, frizzy, dry, or damaged. The good news is, with the help of a hairstylist, you can restore and rejuvenate hair using an Aveda strengthening or moisture treatment. But first, you’ll need to determine if your hair is damaged or dry.

Damage

The hair is comprised of a cortex, which contains melanin (color). This core is surrounded by cuticles that overlap and, in healthy hair, lie flat against one another. When the cuticles are damaged, the center may become exposed, making it susceptible to breakage.

Several factors can cause hair damage, including environmental elements, like the sun’s UV rays, heat styling, brushing aggressively, or extensions can also add stress and weaken the hair. Chemical treatments, including relaxers, perms, and permanent color or bleaching, can damage it as well.

For damaged hair, your stylist may recommend a clarifying shampoo to remove pollutants, excess sebum, and other contaminants, followed by a deep conditioning and nourishing treatment to strengthen the hair from the inside out. We recommend AVEDA's Damage Remedy Treatment that adds protein and strengthens the hair.

Dryness

The skin produces natural oils (lipids) that act as lubricants, protecting the hair, and giving it a sheen. Too much or too little oil can be problematic. In the latter case, the strands can dry out. Often, this is caused by overwashing, extreme heat, dry winter conditions, or chlorine. Some people experience dry hair as they age because of hormone changes.

Like damaged hair, dry hair typically appears dull. It may also lose its soft texture and tangle easily. However, unlike damaged hair, it retains the same thickness from the root to the tip, with little or no breakage. You may also experience dandruff along with dryness.

A conditioning treatment, such as AVEDA's Dry Remedy line, can keep hair moisturized from root to tip. Your hairstylist may also recommend a leave-in conditioner or dry oil for added moisture.
