Whether you live in an apartment or a multi-story home, balconies offer outdoor living space that’s cozy and beautiful. If you have children, their safety is a primary concern, and railings aren’t the only safeguard that should be in place. The following tips can help ensure your family's safety.

How Can I Make My Balcony Safer for Children?

1. Keep the Door Secure

The door leading to the balcony should be child-proof and secure to prevent them from wandering out without supervision. Keep the door locked when the balcony isn’t in use, and check that it can’t be wiggled or pulled open. Outfit the door with child safety devices, such as child-proof doorknob covers, and install a lock that’s out of your child’s reach, such as in the upper corner. You can even augment the security with a simple magnetic alarm that alerts you if the door is opened.

2. Check the Railings

Your child shouldn’t be able to fit through the gaps in the railings, with the ideal gap width being no more than four inches. Plastic balcony mesh or netting can be installed over the bars for an additional layer of security. The rails should be sturdy and in good condition, free of corrosion or cracks. Check the hardware every few weeks, tightening or replacing it as needed. If your railings are damaged or come loose, they’ll need to be replaced.

3. Keep It Clean

Clutter on the balcony may trip children and cause accidents, so keep toys, shoes, and other miscellaneous items put away. Remove dirt, leaves, and grime regularly, as they can hold moisture against the surface and contribute to corrosion or decay. If you notice mold or rust forming on any part of the balcony, have it inspected by a professional to ensure it’s still structurally sound.

4. Watch Furniture Placement

Children can climb furniture from a young age. Doing so near the edge of the balcony places them at risk, as it may enable them to lean or reach over the railing and fall. Keep all furniture—including stools, chairs, and tables—as far back from the edge as possible, and always supervise your children when they’re playing on the balcony.
