Even seemingly ordinary coins can enhance the value of your collection when you have the right information. While you should always rely on a professional coin appraisal to receive a fair and accurate valuation, doing independent research can also provide insight. For instance, you might have a silver war nickel in your pocket right now and not even be aware of it. Here are a few essential facts to know about these rare coins.

What Is a Silver War Nickel?

Most nickels are made from copper and nickel at a ratio of 75% to 25%. Towards the end of WWII, nickel became a hot commodity since it was used to build armor for tanks and in artillery, including anti-aircraft guns.

Between 1942 and 1945, the increased need for this metal led the U.S. Mint to change the composition of nickels to 35% pure silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. Approximately 870 million silver war nickels were minted during this time period, before the composition reverted to the standard copper-nickel mix.

How Can You Tell If You Have One in Your Collection?

It can be difficult to distinguish regular nickels from silver ones at a glance due to their visual similarity. However, the easiest way to tell if you have one is to look at the year when the coin was minted. Any 5-cent coin minted between 1942 and 1945 may contain silver.

Once you verify the mint year, there are other signs to look for. Unlike regular nickels, the mint mark on silver war nickels is found on the reverse side of the coin. You'll see the letters P, D, or S above the rendering of Monticello if the coin is composed of silver. With traditional nickels, the mint mark appears on the lower right-hand corner on the reverse side or next to the date on the obverse, or front, of the coin.
