When considering rooftop solar panels, installers and homeowners will have to figure out how to position them. Ideally, these panels should have maximum sunlight exposure to produce energy efficiently. However, homes might not be aligned perfectly for this. The guide below explains best practices.

What Is the Best Direction for Solar Panels to Face?

For homes in the northern hemisphere, south-facing solar panels typically receive the greatest amount of sunlight. Panels that face to the southeast or southwest produce slightly lower amounts of electricity.

Those that face west or east won't be in the sun's line of sight for part of the day. Therefore, they collect around 20% less energy than those pointing south. However, because east- and west-facing panels receive high levels of exposure during sunrise and sunset, they can still provide more than enough energy to meet your needs. For example, one study showed that west-facing panels produce 50% more energy than south-facing panels during peak hours when most families return from work or school and use energy-intensive appliances and electronics.

What Difference Does the Angle Make?

In addition to orientation, your roof's steepness, or pitch, plays an important role in solar energy production. With south-facing solar panels, a roof pitch of around 30 or 40 degrees is typically the most efficient for collecting sunlight. West- and east-facing panels generate more energy at shallower angles, such as a 15-degree tilt.

If you have a flat or exceptionally steep roof, you may need to install mounting systems to hold the panels at the desired angle. This can serve as a benefit in some cases. For example, a ballasted panel system can be used to make the solar-energy gathering cells face any direction at any angle for optimal performance.
