Teeth whitening sounds like a simple procedure. What isn't common knowledge is the fact that in order to effectively remove stains on your teeth, the enamel that coats them must be expanded until it becomes porous enough to absorb the treatment. Your tooth enamel will remain in this porous state for 48 hours after the procedure. This means if you aren't careful about what you eat and drink, you could re-stain your teeth immediately. Here is a brief guide to eating after your procedure.
What Foods Should You Avoid?
In general, if a food is capable of staining white clothing or carpet, it can stain your tooth enamel after whitening. This includes smoke and dark drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, juice and cola.
Foods that contain a lot of natural pigment include chocolate, berries, and pasta sauce. Also, watch out for foods and drinks featuring artificial coloring, like sports drinks, gelatin, or cheese popcorn.
Which Foods Are Safe to Eat?
To avoid significant enamel staining after whitening, a "white diet" is recommended. A "white diet" consists of clear liquids and foods that are primarily white or beige. White foods include chicken, fish, pork, tofu, plain yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, rice, bread, apples, pears, bananas, potatoes, and cauliflower.
Be very careful for the first 48 hours and then you may return to your normal diet. Be sure to remain consistent with your dental cleaning appointments to prevent new staining in the future.
