A plumbing leak inside your home is often easy to spot due to visible water damage. In your lawn sprinkler system, however, leaks are less obvious and can therefore go overlooked. It’s important to address them, however, as a leak could cause you to waste excess water and saturate parts of your lawn. Here are some signs you may have a leak in your system.

3 Signs You Have a Leak in Your Lawn Sprinkler System

1. Water Pressure Changes

If your sprinklers seem to be spraying less forcefully, it could be due to a leak. When water is seeping out somewhere else in the system, it disrupts the pressure.

The water reaching the sprinkler heads therefore won’t come out in as steady of a stream as it did previously. If low water flow is only occurring in select sprinkler heads, the leak is likely somewhere nearby those affected.

2. Wet Valve Box

The sprinkler valve box protects the irrigation manifold, which distributes water to the valve. Sometimes, the valve box is located above ground, but it may also be buried.

The valve box is typically located close to the perimeter of your home. Find your valve box and check inside for water. If the box is flooded, it could indicate a leak caused by damaged fittings or corroded parts.

3. Differences in Your Lawn

A leak in your lawn sprinkler system may create pooling water underground. At first, you may notice that one area of the lawn is much greener. Over time, however, the saturation can create mold on the lawn, plant damage, and fungus.

You may also notice areas of depression since sodden soil can make the ground less stable. If these signs are present, watch the area when the sprinklers are running to see if water bubbles up from the ground.
