Enough water should be applied initially to wet 2 inches of soil beneath the sod, leaving it moist but not flooded. The sod should not be walked on for the first two weeks, as the pressure can hinder root establishment.

Watering Schedule

Once the sod has been laid, it requires very frequent watering for the first two weeks. Depending on how much rain is predicted in the forecast, your sod could require up to five waterings per day between the early morning and early afternoon hours. Later in the day, water evaporates faster and less will reach the grass's roots.

Since the need for watering is so frequent, the easiest way to prevent falling behind on watering is to have a lawn irrigation or sprinkler system installed.
