Bedbugs are among the most common pests found in homes. Since they leave itchy bites and make the home environment uncomfortable, they're nuisances everyone would prefer to avoid. To inform you about these pests and help prevent an infestation, check out these frequently asked questions.

An Introduction to Bedbugs

How do you identify them?

Adult bugs are about the size of an apple seed or Lincoln’s head on a penny. They're wingless, flat, and thin and may be brown or reddish. Younger bugs are a creamy yellowish shade. After feeding, their abdomen may appear reddish from the blood. Eggs are about ⅙ the size of an adult bug and white. You may also find eggs or cast skins, although only live bugs confirm a current infestation.

Use a flashlight to illuminate the area you’re searching, even if the room is well-lit already. Wear gloves and use a magnifying glass to search for signs. Check the mattress first, then look underneath and along the seams and box spring. Inspect the walls, curtains, furniture, and along the baseboards next.

Where do they come from?

Bedbugs typically come in from the outdoors with furniture, clothing, boxes, pillows, or luggage when these items are moved from one house or hotel to another. Because they're so difficult to spot, most people don't discover their presence while moving or traveling. Used furniture, especially bed frames and mattresses, often house them.

Though you might think a clean, vacant dwelling is immune to an infestation, these pests can live for months without eating, so examine the space before moving your belongings in.

How can I avoid an infestation?

Get regular pest control inspections to prevent an infestation. When traveling, always inspect the hotel bedding before unpacking or going to bed. If you see evidence of bedbugs, request a new room. If you want to be extra cautious, don’t unpack your suitcase; instead, keep it closed.

Immediately upon returning home, wash all of your clothing on the hottest cycle to kill any pests if they have stowed away in your laundry. Also, be cautious about buying used bedding and thoroughly inspect items before taking them home.

Are they harmful?

Bedbugs are not thought to be harmful. They do bite, but they're not known to carry or spread disease. The bites are often barely noticeable and may appear days later as small red bumps. Occasionally, people have allergic reactions, which may cause an itchy rash.
