When it comes to insulating residential properties, fiberglass is one of the most popular materials to use. Not only is it affordable and adaptable, but it's also non-flammable and non-absorbent. Like all construction materials, though, it has its drawbacks. If your home's fiberglass batt insulation is more than a decade old or people have been in the attic working, keep an eye out for these signs that it needs replacing.

How to Tell When You Need New Fiberglass Insulation

1. Higher Utility Bills

If your utility bills spike for no apparent reason, failing insulation may be to blame. Nothing is stopping the hot air outside from making its way inside, thereby forcing the AC system to kick into overdrive. In that same vein, if the insulation has only fallen away in one wall, you may notice a significant difference in the temperatures of the rooms throughout your home.

2. Pest Infestations

Rodents and other pests love using fiberglass to make their nests. If you notice any infestations in your home, there's a good chance the intruders stole some insulation on their way in to make themselves cozy.

Call a technician to locate the site of any such "bald spots" and confirm the extent of the issue. Depending on the circumstances, it may be possible to address only the affected panels. If the insulation happens to be more than 15 years old, though, it may be wise to replace all of it since it's reaching the end of its life span anyway.

3. Mold & Mildew

Because insulation hinders airflow, it essentially never dries out once it gets wet. If you notice mold or mildew sprouting on the walls or ceilings throughout your home, the underlying fiberglass may be damp. Should this be the case, remove it immediately and then call a mold remediation company. They'll be able to kill the infestation, so it doesn't hurt the air quality in your home. Then, have new insulation installed.
