Vinyl siding can last as long as 60 years. To keep it looking beautiful and maximize its life span, you'll need to perform a bit of regular maintenance. Here’s how to keep the vinyl attractive and minimize the risk of damage.

How to Care for Vinyl Siding

1. Wash It

Wash your siding once a year to remove dirt and any stains. You can use a garden hose or a pressure-washer. Avoid harsh chemicals, which can discolor or warp the surface; plain water should get rid of most grime.

If there are areas where the siding seems stained or moldy and the water isn’t enough, you can wipe it down with a cloth and a mild dish detergent. Cleaning is also a chance to inspect the vinyl for areas that might need repair.

2. Avoid Common Sources of Damage

Vinyl siding is fade-resistant and not vulnerable to wood rot, but it does have a few weaknesses. Large amounts of pressure or a heavy impact can crack it, so avoid playing sports near vinyl siding and be careful with landscaping equipment.

Vinyl can also melt when it gets too hot. If you have a grill, move it well away from the siding so that the heat doesn’t warp the material. If you use a power-washer, keep it level or angle it downwards. If the stream flows upwards, it can force its way under the panels and cause water damage inside the wall.

3. Be Careful With Paint

Most brands of vinyl siding shouldn't be painted. They come with naturally fade-resistant color, and any paint applied to them can react with the material and damage them. Certain varieties can be painted with specific latex-based paints. Ask your siding contractor before you paint your home’s exterior, and test a small, less visible area before painting the whole exterior.
