As life slowly returns to normal throughout Hawaii, you may be looking forward to reconnecting with friends and family after months apart. Of course, you'll want to bring your dog along too, but before you do, it’s important to consider etiquette, dog training, and the permission of those you’re meeting. Here are a few tips to help your next social event go smoothly with your dog along for company.

3 Tips for Dog-Friendly Social Gatherings

1. Ask Permission

Never bring a dog to a gathering without asking the permission of the host and other guests first. Even if you’ve brought your pet along in the past, others’ concerns may have changed, so it’s best to check first. For example, your host may have adopted a dog that isn’t welcoming to other animals or one of the guests may have developed allergies.

If permission is granted, ask about other pets in the home, whether there’s an outdoor area in which your dog can play, and that the host informs other guests that you’re bringing your furry friend with you.

2. Ensure Your Dog Behaves

Before heading to a gathering, your dog should know basic commands and be calm and well-mannered. Basic dog training should cover commands like sit, stay, and come, which are effective for stopping undesirable behavior and reassuring other guests. Your pet should know not to jump on others or chew or damage furniture or household items. They should also have experience socializing with other animals if there will be other pets at the party.

3. Bring Supplies

Your host will likely be busy preparing refreshments and other arrangements for their guests, so bring along any food, treats, or toys your dog may need during your visit. Packing familiar food and water bowls, chew toys, and blankets will cover your dog’s basic needs and help them relax in an unfamiliar environment. You may want to bring a crate or cage in case they get excited, as well as a leash and waste bags to avoid leaving a mess behind.
