On average, semi-truck oil changes are required every 25,000 miles to ensure the engine remains properly lubricated. However, the exact time span and mileage are dependent on several factors. Here's a look at determining how often your rig’s oil should be replaced.

What Can Affect Your Semi-Truck Oil Change Schedule?

1. Age of Vehicle

Newer truck technology, such as filter and fuel improvements, has allowed drivers to travel up to 50,000 miles between changes. However, if your truck is 10 or more years old or approaching the 750,000-mile marker, the engine is more susceptible to dirt, soot, and hydrocarbon buildup. Scheduling this maintenance around every 10,000 to 15,000 miles will ensure this debris is cleared out, so it can run more efficiently.

2. Driving Habits

The way you drive will also impact how quickly the oil wears. If you frequently transport heavy loads over long distances or drive on steep inclines or non-paved roads, you can expect to schedule more frequent oil changes throughout the year. Similarly, accelerating harshly and letting the engine idle for long periods will put extra stress on the engine, causing it to dirty the lubricant much faster.

3. Climate Conditions

Where you drive can also cause the oil to degrade faster. Regularly driving through high-heat environments will cause the lubricant to become less viscous and be more prone to oxidation. Similarly, frequent cold starts will impair bearing and cylinder wall lubrication.

If you have to frequently drive on dirt roads or in humid areas, there’s also an increased risk of airborne contaminants getting into the motor oil. This can result in sludge deposits, corrosive wear, oxidization, and additive depletion.
