What you eat after exercise is just as important as what you eat before. Consuming the right foods after you work out will help you build muscle and recover more quickly. This guide will explain why post-workout nutrition is important and what types of food to eat after hitting the gym.

Why Eating After a Workout is Important

Muscles use stored glycogen energy for fuel. This gives you the energy you need to get through a workout, but those glycogen levels will be depleted when you’re done. If you don’t fill them back up with the proper food sources, you may feel tired and fatigued. During intense exercise, some muscle proteins may also get damaged. This often happens during strength workouts at the gym.

The right combination of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, and minerals can speed up the process of rebuilding glycogen and help repair muscle proteins. This will shorten your recovery process and help you see physically progress more quickly while exercising.

What to Eat After Hitting the Gym

An ideal post-workout snack or meal will contain protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fat. Carbohydrates will restore your glycogen levels quickly and protein will help your muscles repair any damage caused during exercise. Healthy fats from sources like avocado and olive oil can also help repair muscle and keep you fuller longer. Eat a post-workout meal within 45 minutes of finishing a run or visiting the gym.

Some good carbohydrate-rich foods to eat after a workout include sweet potatoes, quinoa, oatmeal, and fruit. Excellent protein options include protein powder, yogurt, salmon, or eggs. Some healthy fats to consume include avocados, coconut oil, flax seeds, or nut butter. The best post-workout meal will have a combination of all three nutrient groups. For example, you could eat a peanut butter sandwich on whole-grain bread, a plate of grilled chicken and vegetables, or yogurt with berries and granola.
