Nearly 27% of seniors in the U.S. have diabetes, and over $200 billion is spent annually on medical costs associated with the condition. Fortunately, Medicare benefits are available for certain services and supplies related to diabetic care. However, plans vary in the type of coverage they offer, so it’s important to understand your needs when living with diabetes. The following guide explains what’s covered under each option.

Medicare Parts A & B

For those enrolled in Original Medicare, Part A will cover hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, and hospice care. Part B will generally cover outpatient doctor visits, blood sugar screenings, lab tests, and education programs to help with diabetes management, including foot exams, glaucoma tests, hemoglobin tests, and medical nutrition therapy. Part B will also help offset the costs of supplies such as blood sugar monitors, test strips, lancet devices, insulin pumps, and therapeutic shoes or inserts.

Medicare Part C

Medicare benefits

Also referred to as Medicare Advantage, Part C plans are provided by private insurance companies. They’re required to cover the same services as Original Medicare benefits, but there may be different guidelines when it comes to receiving care or treatment. Many of these plans offer prescription drug coverage, as well.

Medicare Part D

Since Medicare Part B doesn’t cover medications or all of the diabetic supplies a person may need, patients often find private prescription drug plans that provide coverage for medications used to treat or control diabetes at home, including insulin taken by injection and oral anti-diabetic drugs. Part D also covers additional supplies, like syringes, needles, alcohol swabs, gauze, and insulin inhaler devices.
