As summer approaches with longer and warmer days, countless households are turning on their cooling systems for the first time of the year. This makes it the perfect time to think about your A/C maintenance. Test out your system and look for the signs you're due for a tune-up, which will help your system run efficiently and reliably all season long.

When to Schedule a Cooling Tune-Up

1. Strange Odors

Turning on your system for the first time may create a smell of dust, as all the dust that's accumulated in your ducts and on the vents is kicked up. However, this should fade quickly, and you shouldn't smell anything else. A strong musty smell could indicate mold in your ducts or condenser unit, while a really foul odor could mean there's a dead animal trapped in the ducts. A pungent burning smell might mean that the wire insulation needs to be replaced.

2. Weak Airflow

Wait for the cooling to kick on, then stand in front of each of the vents. You should feel a strong and cold air flow through every one of them. If the flow of air seems to be weak, try changing your system's air filter. Your owner's manual will tell you what type to buy and where to locate it.

3. Loud Function

You should be able to hear the air flow coming from the vents, and if you're standing next to the outdoor unit, you can hear it gently hum as it works. Any other noises indicate trouble. For example, rattling often occurs if there's a loose part, while squealing could indicate a belt needs to be replaced. A raspy humming noise might mean the fan blades are damaged. Your technician can locate the source of the noise and fix it.
