Starting preschool is an exciting milestone for kids. Your child will encounter new people, play opportunities, and rules, but easing them into the change can help them focus on the positives of this experience. The guide below offers advice for parents on how to set their son's or daughter's mind at ease.

How to Prepare Your Child for Preschool

1. Get Into a Routine Early

Get them acclimated to a routine similar to what they will have once preschool starts. Make sure they wake up, get ready for the day, eat snacks and meals, and go to bed around the same time. A set schedule will help them understand what is expected of them and enforce positive habits.

2. Use Books & Play

Reading and play aren’t just for fun—they can help kids learn about unfamiliar concepts and what to do in new situations. There are many children’s books that touch on different aspects of starting school, from explaining what activities they will likely encounter to discussing meeting new friends. You can also engage in make-believe scenarios where you and your child take turns acting as the student, parent, and teacher.

3. Reduce Separation Anxiety

Before preschool, many children are accustomed to always being around their parents. When parents drop them off for the first time, it's common for kids to cling. This is known as separation anxiety. While it is a normal stage of child development, you can take steps to relax them.

Practice leaving your child with a trusted adult, such as a relative or friend, for short periods. Come up with a goodbye ritual to give the act a sense of normalcy, but avoid long and emotional goodbyes that could increase stress.

4. Take a Tour of the School

See if you can arrange a tour of the preschool before your child attends. Early visits allow them to meet and talk to their new teachers, explore the building, and get a glimpse of the activities they can look forward to.

5. Find Out What to Pack

Having everything packed early for your child’s first day will help you avoid the stress of being late or forgetting something. Your child's needs will vary based on the program, so check with the preschool for a list of recommended and required supplies.
