For most people, any encounter with law enforcement causes anxiety. But to protect yourself and your rights, you must navigate the interaction with calm and skill. While an attorney will be useful if you get into legal trouble, here's a basic guide to help you handle police encounters without issues.

How to Interact With the Police

1. Remain Civil

Be respectful throughout the interaction, even if the officer doesn't extend that same courtesy. The officers will gauge your every move and everything you say, so don't give them a reason to escalate the situation. When they request to see your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance, maintain calm and civility as you show them these items.

2. Keep Both Hands Visible

As soon as you pull over, roll down the window, then place your hands on the steering wheel and keep them there. If an officer can't see your hands, they may suspect you have a weapon and respond with force.

When you have to move to retrieve your documents or to comply with any other requests, do so slowly, deliberately, and with your hands plainly visible or raised in the air.

3. When in Doubt, Don't Speak

From the moment the interaction begins, anything you say can potentially be used against you, which can complicate the situation later. Keep answers short and to the point, and avoid incriminating yourself in any way.

After the officers check your documents, feel free to ask if you're under arrest, and if not, ask if you are free to leave. If an officer puts you in handcuffs, stop speaking, other than to inform them that you are invoking the right to silence and want to speak to an attorney.
