Roll-off dumpsters streamline projects by providing convenient, sizable spaces for trash and debris. Whether you’re planning an estate clean-out, demolition job, yard clean-up, or another big project requiring a roll-off container, you must know what you can and cannot throw out. The following are the most common prohibited items.

What Materials Cannot Be Disposed Into Roll-Off Dumpsters?

1. Wood

Wood waste such as fencing, railroad ties, shed and porch materials, and telephone poles are often treated with chemicals that heighten fire risks and harm the environment if they break down in landfills. County governments often provide wood recycling programs, as do national organizations such as Habitat For Humanity.

2. Toxic Chemicals

Paints, paint thinners, solvents, motor oil, fuel, adhesives such as epoxy and glue, varnish, freon, and all other toxic chemicals do not belong in roll-off containers. They damage dumpsters, create cleaning difficulties, and can cause adverse reactions from exposure. For example, old paint can contain lead or mercury that causes brain, muscle, and nervous system damage. Toxic chemicals increase fire hazard risks because of their flammability, and they also leach into soil and groundwater if they enter landfills.

3. Food Waste

Food debris attracts insects and small animals, including cockroaches, flies, rats, mice, squirrels, raccoons, and possums. It also smells as it breaks down and creates messes within the dumpsters. Composting provides an eco-friendly alternative for most food waste, such as vegetables and fruits. Throw out meat and dairy products with weekly household trash collection.

4. Mattresses & Box Springs

Box springs and mattresses require special recycling or disposal to avoid the spread of bed bugs. The insects frequently hide in bedding materials, among other upholstered products. Find out your county’s mattress and box spring disposal guidelines, such as discarding them in designated plastic bags, or look into recycling options.
