Taking care of your vehicle's tires is vital for preserving their performance and efficiency and staying safe on the road. When they're in poor condition, unevenly worn, or improperly inflated, the risk of a crash increases because you lose traction and handling ability. Also, you'll pay more at the gas pump because of lower fuel mileage. Following a few simple maintenance guidelines can prevent these problems and keep you on the road.

Do:

Check the pressure.

At least once a month, check the tire pressure and adjust the air as needed. You can find the recommended pressure on a sticker inside the driver's door of the vehicle.

Overinflated rubber reduces traction, increases the risk of a blowout, and contributes to uneven wear. Meanwhile, underinflation can cause the outer edges to wear down faster. In general, the ideal pressure is between 30 and 35 pounds per square inch, but you should follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the best results.

Have the tires rotated.

Rotating helps the rubber wear more evenly. Unevenly worn tread can make it more difficult to control the vehicle, especially on wet roads.

Uneven wear can also cause problems with the car's suspension and alignment and increase vibrations that affect the vehicle's overall performance. Many new warranties also require regular rotations to remain in effect, so follow the manufacturer's recommended schedule. This usually means rotating the components at least twice a year or at every other oil change.

Don't:

Drive too fast.

Obeying the speed limit not only helps you stay safe and avoid a speeding ticket, but it also preserves the tires. High speeds increase friction and heat, which can damage the rubber, affect air pressure, and even contribute to a blowout.

It's also more challenging to avoid road hazards that can damage the rubber at high speeds. Always check the speed limit while driving, and be especially careful on bumpy or hazardous paths.

Carry too much cargo.

Tires are designed to carry specific loads, and regularly exceeding their weight capacity can increase friction and heat that weaken the rubber over time. This problem is especially common with pickup trucks or SUVs that regularly transport heavy loads, but cars can be overloaded as well.

Check the manufacturer's listed weight limits for the tires, and take several trips if necessary to prevent overloading. Regularly clear the trunk and backseat of unnecessary items to lessen your load on daily commutes.
