Your air conditioning plays a vital role in keeping your family cool and comfortable, especially during the summer. Regular upkeep will improve your system’s efficiency while also reducing your risk for unexpected repairs. In addition to annual inspections by an HVAC contractor, there are several simple tasks you can do to keep the system in top shape.

The Top Air Conditioning Maintenance Practices

1. Change the Air Filters Regularly

Your system’s air filters are designed to trap dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants to improve your indoor air quality. Over time, however, this debris buildup can restrict the airflow to your air conditioner, forcing it to work harder to cool your home.

Replace the filters every three months to avoid this problem. Families with indoor pets should replace the filters monthly due to the prevalence of pet dander and hair that can get trapped in the filters.

2. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clean

The outdoor unit also requires adequate airflow to maintain its maximum efficiency. Trim shrubs back and avoid storing other items within three feet of the unit. Periodically remove leaves, grass clippings, and other debris that may have gotten trapped against the unit.

You can eliminate this debris by carefully vacuuming the exterior with a soft-bristle brush. Wipe down dirt and other buildup with water and a dish soap mixture, using a sponge or soft brush.

3. Fix Bent Fins

The condenser coil fins can become bent due to impacts or weather exposure, hindering airflow and reducing your unit’s efficiency. You can actually realign bent fins by applying gentle pressure with a dinner knife. Slightly insert the knife and press the fins back into place. Do not insert the knife over half an inch into the fins.
