Strong summer storms are common in the South, which means homeowners must be prepared to take action as soon as possible after the rain and winds move on. Siding, deck, and roof repair may be necessary, but there are also less visible problems that can arise after a storm, such as water leaks. From assessing the exterior of the home to contacting the insurance company, here's a closer look at what steps to take when the skies clear.

A Homeowner's Checklist for Dealing With Storm Damage

1. Walk Around the Exterior

A thorough visual check will show you the scope of the damage. When the weather forecast says it's safe to go outside, complete a full circle around the home while looking for breakage, chips, discoloration, and other issues. Common areas that need attention after a storm include siding, bricks, decks, fencing, windows, and doors. The AC compressor unit should be examined for dings and dents, too.

Safety should be a priority as you assess the property. Downed power lines should always be assumed to be live, and it's wise to watch out for standing water anywhere near them. Broken glass and nails may also be scattered around your home. Thick-soled rubber galoshes are helpful for avoiding these hazards.

2. Check the Roof

While it's not wise to climb up onto the roof, you can see a lot from the ground. Any tree limbs should be obvious, but a fallen branch may have slipped off the roof after doing damage. Look for bent flashing, which is the metal material used around chimneys and other roof components, and missing shingles. Dented or dislodged gutters will need to be repaired as soon as possible, too.

Roof leaks are common when tree limbs or hail falls during a storm. The underlayment might have been punctured, and high winds might have torn off shingles. In addition to performing an outdoor tour, check the attic for the presence of leaking water. If the sun's out, you may even be able to see light streaming through a new hole.

3. Document the Damage

During these steps, take photographs of every area that's been affected by the storm and will need repair or replacement services. If possible, take pictures before moving anything. It's also wise to write out a list of these issues.

If your family needs to stay at a hotel temporarily, keep the receipts. The easier it is to show that the inclement weather caused damage, the more likely you are to have a successful homeowners insurance payout.

4. Contact Your Insurance Company

Once you're satisfied that you've documented all the exterior and interior damage, it's time to reach out to your insurance agent. In addition to the list of physical damages, be sure to discuss any initial expenses you incurred due to the storm's aftermath, such as a hotel stay or emergency plumbing services.

If you hire a roof repair and building contractor to address the damage, they'll be able to assist you in assembling a complete list of the storm's effects. They'll also give you an estimate that may help expedite the insurance claim.
