These days, Botox® injections are used for everything from anti-aging solutions to migraine relief. When doctors and plastic surgeons administer the treatment, a dose of botulinum toxin blocks the nerves from sending signals to the muscles, preventing them from contracting and wrinkling the skin. Though the recovery period is minimal, it's still smart to take good care of yourself in the hours after the appointment. To enjoy the full effect of your treatment, adopt these three simple aftercare tips.

3 Aftercare Tips for Botox

1. Hands Off

Right after the Botox is injected, it still needs time to settle in place so that it can fully take effect on the muscle in question. For this reason, it's best to avoid touching the area for at least 24 hours after the injection. Applying undue pressure could cause the skin to sag—or lead to nerve damage, in severe cases.

2. Use Ice or Painkillers as Necessary

Immediately after the appointment, the tissues around the injection might feel a bit sore. Luckily, you can reduce inflammation by taking over-the-counter painkillers. Your doctor might also suggest using a cooling gel pack to reduce pain and swelling at the injection site.

3. Take It Easy

For the next 24 hours, it’s important to prioritize self-care. Avoid strenuous exercise that could ramp up blood flow to already inflamed areas or irritate the skin with perspiration.

You should also avoid any activities that require you to bend over or go upside-down, such as yoga. Instead, spend the rest of the day tending to light household duties or simply relaxing in bed or on the couch. After a full day and night of rest, you can go back to life as usual.
