As a teen dancer, perhaps you feel comfortable when practicing at home or during dance classes but get nervous about performing in public. Nervousness is a natural reaction that can be overcome. These tips will help you put your best foot forward and dance with confidence on stage.

How to Calm Nerves When Performing Outside of Dance Class

1. Know You're Prepared

Confidence comes with knowing you are well-prepared to perform. If you have difficult moves to master, practice them as often as possible before and after your dance classes and at home. Ask your instructor and observers for feedback. Videotape your practices to look for areas that need improving, and work on them. Continue taping and watching your progress. Seeing yourself getting better will boost your confidence.

2. Eat Well

Eating a balanced meal isn't just important while you're training. You need plenty of energy to perform. A few hours before the show, choose a meal full of protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats. Protein is best for building muscle; carbs will give you energy to last the whole performance; and fats help you feel full. Avoid greasy, fatty foods like fried chicken, as well as sugary sweets. Instead, go for whole grains, fresh fruit and veggies, and baked chicken or tofu.

Drink plenty of water with squeezes of fresh lemon to stay hydrated and refreshed and increase your potassium and vitamin C intake. These nutrients help improve coordination, protect cells, and repair injuries that may occur during dance classes or practices.

3. Look Above the Audience

When you go on stage, avoid looking at the crowd directly at first. Look above their heads or at the crew working the lights and sound in the back of the auditorium. This trick aids relaxation by helping you forget the audience is there and allowing you to concentrate on performing. Once you feel more at ease, start making eye contact and engaging with the audience.
