Signing children up for dance classes is a wonderful way for them to get exercise, meet new friends, and develop a fun new skill. Before your child attends their first class, however, there are a few steps you can take to make sure they’re prepared. Here’s how to help your little one have the best experience possible.

How to Make Your Child’s First Dance Class Successful

1. Give Them a Pep Talk

Kids can get nervous about trying new activities, especially in a room full of strangers. Settle any first-time butterflies by discussing how they might enjoy dance class. You should give your child a quick run-down of expectations, such as listening to the instructors and following directions, but emphasize how much fun they’re going to have. They’ll make friends, wear a special outfit, and learn new stretches and moves. The more excited they are, the more they'll get out of the experience, so it's important to help them feel more enthusiastic about the process.

2. Know the Dress Code

When your child wears comfortable clothes and has the necessary accessories for their first dance class, they'll feel more at ease and will be able to participate fully. For that reason, it's important to get familiar with the dance studio’s dress code before your child’s first day. Most dance schools list recommended attire on their website, but you can always call and ask if you're not sure. Once you know, order or purchase the appropriate clothes and shoes well in advance to make sure your child is ready.

3. Fuel Their Energy

When kids are tired or hungry, they tend to lose their focus and grow irritable. You want your child to have a positive experience at their first dance class, so it's important to set them up for success. For example, make sure they get plenty of rest the night before their class. They’ll also need to fuel their workout, so give them a small, healthy snack with water before class. Trail mix, low-fat yogurt with granola, peanut butter and banana, carrots with hummus, and string cheese are all excellent options.
