Created from Clostridium botulinum, the injectable works by relaxing facial muscles. Repeated muscle contractions cause the skin to wrinkle, whereas these lines fade out if the muscles are relaxed. This substance is frequently used to smooth lines on the forehead, around the mouth, and around the eyes. However, it does not affect wrinkles from gravity or sun damage. 

Results are typically noticeable 24 to 48 hours after treatment and last three to six months before fresh injections are necessary to relax increasingly active muscles. Side effects can include injection site bruising and swelling. Other symptoms, such as headaches, are rare.

Botox® offers numerous other benefits beyond the cosmetic. It blocks acetylcholine, a type of neurotransmitter responsible for pain signals to provide migraine relief, and it works on sweat gland-activating nerves to curb severe perspiration. 

Juvederm

The volumizing gel product comes in numerous types that target different parts of the face. However, they all consist of hyaluronic acid, a sugar found naturally in the skin, to fill in facial lines and grooves. The body makes less of this filler as it ages, causing skin to wrinkle. 

The dermal filler includes lidocaine, a type of pain reliever, to prevent discomfort during treatment, with typical side effects including injection site redness, bumps, tenderness, and itching. Like Botox®, the filler’s side effects diminish two to four weeks after treatment. 

Results last between six months and two years, depending on the product you use. For example, Voluma XC® is for cheek volume and remains effective for 24 months. Smoothing effects are usually noticeable right away.
