When you've just experienced a hit-and-run accident, there's so much to do that it's hard to know what comes first. Calling for auto repair is a priority, but so is filing an accident report. So what comes first? Here is a brief guide to help you navigate through this stressful time.

5 Steps to Take After a Hit-and-Run

1. Check for Injuries

The first thing to do in the wake of any car accident is to check yourself, your passengers, and any pedestrians for injuries. You may be tempted to follow the person who has fled, but safety comes first, and following will only make your case harder. Scrapes, bruises, and soreness are common, but if anyone has sustained a worse injury, you need to call for help immediately. Promptly calling 911 will ensure that everyone gets treatment as soon as possible.

2. Record the Car's Info

Once you're sure that everyone is safe and tended to, write down any details you can remember about the car that has fled. Make, model, color, approximate year, and any identifying qualities can all help when filing a report. It's crucial to write this down as soon as you can because these details will be easy to forget during such a busy and stressful time.

3. Document the Event

After that, you should write down all the details of the event as you remember them. Document where you were, when you saw the car coming, who else was around and may have witnessed the event, how the accident took place, and what happened in the aftermath.

4. Take Pictures

If it's safe to get out of the car, take some time to get photographic evidence of the scene. Take pictures of your car exactly where it ended up, all damage, the road and any debris from the accident, and the surrounding areas. If anyone has injuries, you may want to get evidence of that, too. These photos will help you with your insurance claim and if you need to file a police report.

5. Call Your Insurance

Your insurance company has all the information you'll need to file a report, receive medical treatment, and get your vehicle towed to an auto repair shop. They will be able to walk you through the process and make this incident slightly less stressful. Calling them right away also ensures that you have access to all your accident benefits. If you call them after the fact, some of those benefits may no longer apply.
