What Are Unique Attractions Near Anchorage?

1. Wolf Song of Alaska

This nonprofit organization in Eagle River works to protect wolves and educates visitors about their longstanding symbolism throughout history and in folklore, myth, and legend. Its interactive traveling exhibit was viewed by over 2.3 million visitors across North America, delighting the young and old with exciting facts about the wolves of Alaska as well as other canids and predators. This is a fantastic attraction for those with a particular interest in wild animals of the last frontier.

3. Turnagain Arm Bore Tide

Located near Anchorage, this summer attraction calls thrillseekers and waterlovers alike to explore the mystical waterways of Turnagain Arm. This gravitational phenomenon creates waves up to 10 feet tall, sending surfers 15 miles per hour through the tidal bore every full or new moon. Enjoy this incredible scene without stepping foot in the water by watching from one of the many vistas along the roads lining Turnagain Arm, and keep a lookout for beluga whales and harbor seals.

4. Burial Spirit Houses

A graveyard outside of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church displays an 800-year-old tradition combining Russian Orthodox and Native American burial practices. Over 100 colorful dollhouse-like structures make up the burial spirit houses in Eklutna Historical Park. These cheerful spirit boxes were placed over the bodies of the deceased 40 days after death and were left to decompose and return to the earth.
