A ceiling fan is a convenient household feature that can cool or warm a room, depending on the rotation of the blades. Many models these days also include lighting features for additional illumination in the room. Unfortunately, these fixtures develop issues that may require the help of an electrician to fix. Continue reading to discover ways that a ceiling fan with a lighting fixture can malfunction.

What Are Common Ceiling Fan Problems?

1. Fan Won't Turn On

If the blades don't rotate after pulling on the fan's cord or flipping the on/off switch, the problem could be a lack of electrical current from a tripped breaker or a blown fuse. You can reset a tripped breaker or replace bad fuses.

However, if the circuit breaker and fuses are in order and the ceiling fan still won't turn on, the electrical wiring may be frayed or shorted, which will require the expertise of a skilled electrician.

2. Light Flickers

Ceiling fans with light fixtures often have a flickering problem. The bulb may need changing, or it may be screwed too loosely into the socket, preventing a stable electrical connection between the fixture and the bulb. If there is no issue with the bulb or connection, the flickering could be due to voltage fluctuation.

Take note of when the lights flicker. If the light only blinks when you operate a major appliance that draws a lot of electricity like a dishwasher or washing machine, you likely have a voltage problem.

3. Fan Wobbles While Rotating

When your ceiling fan is working, the blades should rotate with ease while the fixture's body remains stationary. If the body wobbles when the fan is on, that usually means the hardware attaching the appliance to the ceiling is not stable. The simplest way to address this problem is to check the screws and bolts for looseness and tighten them if necessary.

Another reason why the fan may wobble is damaged blades. If one or more are bent, they will not slice through the air correctly, resulting in instability while in use. For broken blades, the best solution is usually to replace the entire fan.
