Certain areas of the body are more prone to weight gain, which can make losing fat feel like an uphill battle. The stomach, thighs, and buttocks are a few examples of spots that can be hard to trim down with diet and exercise alone. In these instances, liposuction can be an effective solution, as it removes excess fat in a targeted procedure. If you've been considering this approach, it's natural to have some questions about how it works.

Liposuction FAQ

How does the procedure work?

Liposuction is a surgical technique that removes fat deposits located between muscle and skin. The surgeon makes a tiny incision into the skin at the target area and inserts a slim cannula. Fat deposits are then removed via a vacuum. You’ll be given an anesthetic to ensure the procedure is entirely comfortable.

Is liposuction permanent?

Liposuction results vary between patients. It's largely up to you how well the results are maintained, as a healthy diet and regular exercise will help ensure the fat removed during liposuction doesn't build up again. Otherwise, it's possible to gain back the weight you lost.

What is the recovery like?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home on the same day, though you might be required to have a friend or family member drive you. Afterward, you'll need to wear a compression bandage or garment to keep the swelling down. You'll also need to rest after the procedure and may need to take several days off work. Generally, a few weeks are needed to recover completely.

Am I a candidate?

Liposuction can be used for the buttocks, hips, knees, arms, neck, breasts, thighs, and face. Men and women can undergo liposuction to remove fat in these areas. Most people are viable candidates, but certain health conditions can make it less feasible, such as diabetes. A doctor can advise on whether it’s an option for you.
