Patio pavers provide the perfect blend of beauty and function, which is why they are commonly used in hardscapes. While they don't require as much maintenance as other materials, taking care of them ensures they look excellent for many years. Here are several strategies to help rejuvenate your pavers.

How Can You Take Care of Patio Pavers?

1. Sweep Regularly

Sweep at least once or twice a week to remove any dirt and debris that accumulate on the surface of your hardscape. Organic materials can trap moisture, which eventually leads to stains, discoloration, and deterioration of the stones. Even if you have already swept once during the week, perform this task again before a forecasted storm arrives, as dry debris is easier to clean than mud.

2. Wash Them

While sweeping is effective, the best way to remove stubborn grime is with regular cleaning. Create a solution of warm water and mild dish soap to remove sticky substances that cling to the pavers. If mold and mildew are present, use white vinegar instead of soap. Coat the surface with your chosen solution, let it sit for about 30 minutes, then rinse it off. If you have particularly tough spots that a hose cann't remove, consider using a pressure washer.

3. Seal the Surface

When your landscape contractors install the hardscape initially, they will likely seal the surface. However, this protective coating is not permanent, which is why you should reapply it every two to three years. This is a quick and affordable process that creates a protective layer on top of the patio so that the pavers are less likely to experience damage from foot traffic, ultraviolet rays, and moisture.

4. Remove Weeds

Even the smallest amount of dirt between pavers provides a place for seeds to germinate, leading to weeds sprouting in the middle of your hardscape. To prevent this, use polymeric sand to hold the pavers in place, as weeds cannot grow in this substance easily. If weeds do pop up, use a mixture of half white vinegar and half water to kill them. This solution is an effective way to remove weeds and is harmless to pets and children.
