The body goes through many changes during pregnancy, and many new mothers want to get back into a fitness routine after giving birth and recovering for a while. When it comes to postpartum workouts, CrossFit® is great for restoring strength, function, and appearance. Here are a few important points to keep in mind for your safe return to exercising after having a baby.

A Guide to Postpartum CrossFit Training

How soon can I begin training again?

Every woman is different and experiences a different recovery process. In most cases, medical staff recommend a return to exercise after the six-week postpartum checkup. If you trained vigorously before pregnancy, you might be able to return a little sooner. However, if it was a challenging pregnancy, or you had a cesarean section, consider waiting a little longer until you fully recover. Talk with your doctor and get the go-ahead before starting a new regimen.

What sort of activities should I start with?

CrossFit

Pregnancy and delivery can cause weakness in abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. While strength training helps build these muscle groups, it's best to progress into more rigorous exercises slowly to ensure your body is ready. You can also work with a trainer who has experience with postpartum exercise and can assist in developing a suitable routine until you're back at full strength.

What are some other physical issues to watch out for?

Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy tend to make joints hypermobile. Because of this greater range of movement, you're at risk of injury if you overextend a joint. Try to stay mindful of hypermobility and don't push too far when working out. If you feel tired or sore, take a break.

What benefits do CrossFit workouts offer new moms?

When caring for your new child, it helps to be physically and mentally healthy. Intensive exercise checks both boxes while also providing a healthy way to alleviate the stress associated with parenthood. Strong muscles ensure you can easily lift your baby and haul around diaper bags and car seats without breaking a sweat. Thanks to the supportive community at the gym, you'll also feel a lot more confident and secure.
