After a hot summer, the fall season may not seem like the time to think about your home’s furnace. However, getting this equipment in shape early on will ensure you stay warm this winter and minimize the need for surprise furnace repairs. To help you optimize your heating system for the dropping temperatures, try these simple ways to prepare the appliance this autumn.

How to Prepare Your Furnace for Fall

1. Clean the Equipment

Clear away all obstructions within a 3-foot radius of the furnace to ensure the equipment doesn’t overheat while operating. Remove any debris that has collected in flue pipes, as blockages may harm ventilation and create fire risks. Additionally, dust and wipe down the exterior to prevent built-up particles from damaging the internal components.

2. Replace the Filter

The heating system is equipped with a filter that removes dust, debris, allergens, and other small particles in the air. If the screen becomes clogged, the furnace will have to work harder to force air through the ducts.

You may also experience poor indoor air quality as contaminants are sent back into your home. To prevent problems, swap out the old filter, and make sure to replace it again in about 90 days. However, if you have allergies or pets, you may need more frequent replacements to ensure clean air.

3. Seal Drafts

Carefully check your home for drafty spots where cool outdoor air can enter — such as around windows and doors. Use caulking or weatherstripping to seal gaps. Taking this step will prevent wasteful heat loss and reduce the amount of energy the furnace needs to keep temperatures stable.

4. Check the Pilot Light

If you have a gas furnace, make sure the pilot light is prepared to burn fuel through the winter. To check this component, remove the appliance's outer panel and look at the flame near the burner.

If the flame isn’t lighting, isn’t blue, or flickers, consult an HVAC contractor to see if furnace repairs are necessary. They may need to replace the fan or clear exhaust vent blockages.
